why lac operon is related to catabolism?

Dear Student,

Lac operon is related to catabolism as it has three structural genes (z, y, a) which help in the metabolism of lactose. The z gene codes for beta-galactosidase which is mainly responsible for the break down of lactose which is a disaccharide into its monomers glucose and galactose. The y gene codes for permease enzyme and this enzyme helps by increasing the permeability of beta galactosides into the cell. Since the genes in lac operon are responsible for the breakdown of lactose to smaller units it is related to catabolism.
