Why landslides have increased in heavily populated region in mountain

Landslides have increased in heavily populated regions in mountains because:
1) The buildings or the homes built on these regions may weaken the ground and destabilise it which may cause landslides.
2) The pressure exerted by the population on the ground and also by building their homes in the mountains may be the major reason for a landslide to occur.
