why smell is not matter.whereas the air(oxygen) is matter.

Dear Student,
The sense of smell is not matter. However, the smell or odour of a substance is Classified as matter. The smell of any substance (say, perfume) is the gaseous form of that substance which our olfactory system can detect (even at very low concentrations)and also occupy space and have mass. Hence, smell of perfume is matter.
Hope it helps

Smell is not a matter because it is abstract and it is not a thing.

Hi Ajay!!
Here is the answer of your query...

The atmosphere of earth (air) is not only made up of oxygen.
It is made up of 78% of nitrogen 21% of oxygen and small amount of carbon dioxide and water droplets.

MATTER is defined as anything that occupies some space.
The air also occupies some space.
FOR EG

When we inflate a balloon it gets inflated. The air causes the balloon to inflate. Hence air occupies some soave in balloon.
Note since air occupies some space it can be defined matter.

On the other hand smell doesn't occupies any space.

Because of this air is called matter but smell is not.

Hope it helps.
Please levee it a like.

Smell is not matter as it is an example of abstract noun whereas air is matter as it is a homogeneous mixture of gases.
