Why the solubility of MgCl2 is greater than that of MgF2?

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

Solubility of a compound depends on two factors
i)Lattice energy
ii) hydration energy.

MgCl2 easily forms hydrates. In MgCl2, the hydration /solvation energy is higher than the lattice energy, due to which it is highly soluble whereas in MgF2 the lattice energy is much higher [because F- is a small ion and the forces of attraction between the molecule is high] , than the hydration energy. So it is less soluble.
