Why was mr. herriot shocked at trickis appearance

Mr. Herriot was shocked at Tricky's appearance because he had become fat like a swollen sausage  as a result of over-feeding by its mistress. Mrs. Pumphrey. She made him eat so much that he fell ill. She also provided all the luxury to the dog and never made him do any exercise. Tricky's eyes looked blood shot and watery. Its tongue used to hang from his jaws. It could barely walk.
