why water is known as polar covalent compound?

Dear student!

A molecule is said to be polar when it has a net dipole moment which is raised when the atoms have difference in electronegativity and its magnitude does not cancel off each other.

In a water molecule, there are two hydrogen and one oxygen molecule. As we know that it is not a linear molecule, its a bent shaped molecule so as higher electronegative oxygen pulls two hydrogen atoms towards itself and and give the net dipole moment which brings a partial negative charge on O-atom and partial positive charge on H-atoms and so there occurs polarity due to the bent shape.

Further, water is a covalent compound because, the participating atoms are non metals and so they share their electrons to complete their octet or duets. So, the water has been called as a polar covalent compound.
