Why xylem called wood?
Dear student,
Please find below the answer:
Divisions in the vascular cambium results in the formation of secondary xylem (in the front) and secondary phloem (in the back). The elements in secondary xylem contribute to the formation of wood. This is why xylem is also known as wood.
Secondary xylem is made up of dead cells. There are two types of wood found: Sapwood and heartwood. Sapwood is an active wood which contains water while the heartwood is an inactive wood without water.
Hope this clears your doubt
Regards.
