With reference to context why does the poet use the expression 'kill' rather than 'to cut' a tree ?

Dear Student,

In the given extract, the poet is speaking about killing a tree, instead of cutting it. This is because, the poet personifies the tree in this poem. According to the poet, the tree is not just an object, but a living being who has consumed air, sunlight and water for years and had become a fully-fledged being.
