a. Syria ever since its Independence from France in 1946 has been an arena of political instability, civil strife and military coups.

b The Baathist party has been in power for most of the time in Syria. Presently, it is led by Bashar al-Assad which has concentrated political and military powers.

c. The current political climate is the aftermath of the famous Arab Spring that had erupted in Tunisia, Egypt etc, which has influenced people to fight against the Assad's regime and push for democratic reforms. The government has retaliated in an extreme sense by resorting to killing people,bombings of towns.

d. The civil conflict in Syria turned into sectarian strife with shias and sunni Muslims community fighting against each other .

e. The recent allegation on Syria of using chemical weapons against the civilians in an attempt to crush the protests sparked of a debate on an international front.

f. With US, France, UK calling for a military action against Assad's regime and Russia and China opposing such a military intervention.

g. The impasse has been in a way resolved with US agreeing to Russia's proposal of asking Assad's regime to place their chemical weapons for inspection in front of the international community.

h. The US, France are however also insistent on passing a Security Council resolution if Syria fails to comply.
