Write a brief note about:
(a) One HYV plant
(b) One GM plant

Dear students,

a)  HYV Crops are High Yielding Variety Crops.
Any group of genetically enhanced crops developed by genetic engineering is called high yielding. These contain better qualities like disease resistance, draught resistance, high yield etc in comparison to the original local variety.

b)  GM (genetically modified) plants are the ones in which a gene from some other organism may be another plant or a microorganism is inserted into the plant to get desired characteristic such as disease resistance, response to fertilizers, product quality and higher yields, etc.

GM plants have

    • more tolerance to abiotic stresses such as cold, drought, salinity, heat, etc.

    • insect/pest resistance

    • reduced post-harvest losses

    • efficient mineral usage by plants

    • enhanced nutritional value (e.g., Vitamin A rich rice).
