Dear friend,

I am writing this letter to you to share my experiences in a rescue operation . You might have heard in the news about the recent earthquake that rocked some areas of Sikkim and the adjoining areas of Nepal. The earthquake was devastating killing hundreds. You know I am a cadet in the National Cadet Corps. The NCC organised a team to undertake rescue operation in the earthquake affected areas. I was selected in the team. It was a great opportunity for me as I could participate in a noble mission of helping the distressed.

In the morning of September 15th We boarded a helicopter of the Indian Army which flew to the earthquake affected areas. Having reached there,I was told to lead my team of ten members. The entire earthquake hit area was inaccessible by road. Foul smell was coming from all directions. Many were dead and some were stranded in the debris. We started the rescue operation in the morning around 10 O' clock. Other agencies were also working in the same area. There was no doubt lack of coordination among the agencies in the beginning but ultimately the rescue operations became effective. In the first half my team was able to rescue 60 people. We carried them to the nearby tents erected by the Army Medical Corps. We worked and worked, there was no time for lunch also. In the evening we took a very short tea break. I started reflecting upon the predicament of human beings in such a situation. I could not sleep properly at night as the scenes of helpless people kept streaming in my consciousness.

Next morning, we could see a strange phenomenon. We saw a child about one year old surrounded by dogs from the nearby area. The dogs were escorting the child. In fact, the child had become an orphan. It lost both the parents in the earthquake. We rescued the child and handed over to the Red Cross authorities. The rescue operation continued for three days. At the end of the operation ,we returned back to our place. It was a memorable event in my life. After I came back to my place, my teachers, fellow mates and the Officer in charge of NCC appreciated my work. The NCC organised a seminar on The role of NCC in Disaster management. I participated in the seminar and expressed my views on the topic. I think more and more young students should become volunteers to help the distressed people.

I will also suggest you to join the NCC as a cadet and play constructive role whenever required.
Today no more.

Thanking You,

Yours truly
