• The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed by the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019.
• The Act amends the Citizenship Act, 1955, and seeks to make foreign illegal migrants of certain religious communities - Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain,Parsi and Christians coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan eligible for Indian citizenship.  
• The amendment has been widely criticised as discriminating on the basis of religion in particular for excluding Muslims.
• This has led to widespread protests against the same.
