The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi launched Mission Swacch Bharat on October 2nd with an aim to create a Clean India of Gandhi's dreams. The dateline has been set for 2019 which is the year of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. The mission was envisaged as a mass movement which was also to be linked to economic activity and every citizen is expected to pledge to contribute 100 hours a year towards this cleanliness drive. All government departments will actively participate in this mission and offices up to Panchayat level will be involved in this drive that is to be conducted from September 25th till Diwali. The principle at work is that if the people of India clean their homes in due course around Diwali every year, then why could they not adopt this attitude towards overall cleanliness and opt for a Swacch Bharat. The Prime Minister has called for a change in governance attitude geared towards hygiene and sanitation, his pursuit of cleanliness has also been tied to the thrust of an economic activity, contributing to GDP growth, reduction in healthcare costs and generate further employment. The cleanliness drive will be crucial in promoting tourism and global interest in India because world class levels of hygiene and sanitation will be required to bolster India into the august company of top fifty global tourist destinations. This would bring about a seismic shift in the way in which India is perceived globally and contribute towards the building of its image as an emerging superpower. Solid waste and waste water management through the public-private-partnership model will be initiated in 500 towns and cities across India.

Swachh BharatorSwachh Bharat Abhiyan(Campaign Clean India) is an national level campaign by government of India covering 4041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country.Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 2 Oct 2014,Gandhi Jayanti. On this day, Modi addressed the citizen of India in a public gathering held atRajpath, India and asked everyone to join this campaign.[6]Later on this day, Modi himself swept a pavement at Valmiki Basti, a colony of sanitation worker, near RajpathIndian PresidentPranab Mukherjeeasked every Indian to spend 100 hours annually in this drive. This campaign is supported byBorder Security Force, India andIndian Air Force.

This campaign aims to accomplish the vision of 'clean India' by 2nd October 2019, 150th birthday ofMahatma Gandhiand is expected to cost over Rs 62,000 crore.[9][10]The campaign was described as "beyond politics" and "inspired by patriotism".[11]

More than 3 million government employees and schools and colleges students of India are going to participate in this event.
