Accurately predicting the occurrence of floods, especially flash floods, remains a challenge. The Indian sub-continent is particularly vulnerable to floods due to the erratic, concentrated and seasonal nature of Monsoons. The severity of floods may escalate further in future due to climate change. At the local level, siltation, deforestation, the establishment of habitations on river beds have increased the damage caused by floods. Central Water Commission has established a network of forecasting stations covering the most flood-prone rivers of India to augment flood prediction infrastructure.
