Write short notes on census in India

The word census , which is of Latin origin , can be defined as an official count or survey especially based on population . It is a systematic , well planned procedure to fetch information and record them about the members of a given population . It regularly occurs at certain time intervals . The process includes planning , training , forming questionnaires , collecting information , compiling , monitoring and finally analysing and disseminating the data . Then the data is stored for future use . In India census recordings is thought to have begun in 300 BC during the rule of emperor Chandragupta Maurya under the monitoring of Chanakya . Not only population censuses but also censuses on housing , agriculture and various other issues are carried on in India . The Indian Population Census organization is considered as one of the largest administrative network in the world . The decennial census of India has been conducted 15 times starting from 1871 and the last one was conducted in 2011 . After 1961 , it has been under the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India . All the census since 1951 are conducted under the 1948 Census of India Act . Prior to independence census was conducted to assist the British in governance . After independence census helped to reveal various features of Indian population and other demographic changes in India .
