Dear student,

Mr. Bramble, was a professional heavy weight boxer. He was a tough sports person, yet a sensitive father who cared most about his son’s education. He like his wife was afraid that the truth about his profession might affect Harold’s education adversely. Thus, Brambles kept the truth from Harold. Though Mr. Bramble was a proud boxer, he was ready to forsake his profession for his son. However, the irony was that on knowing the truth, Harold was happy that it was his father who was Young Porky.

Major Percy Stokes, brother of Mrs. Bramble, is not a major character in the story, however, has a distinguished role to play. He is as much concerned about Harold and his academics as Mrs. and Mr. Bramble. He made sure that the father's profession's truth is well kept from the boy. It was Percy who made Bill change his mind to not fight at the Nationals through his letters, until Jerry Fisher disclosed it all to Herald. It was only on being asked by Harold himself Mr. Bramble decided again to fight.

Harold was a prodigy. He was ten and studied at a local private school. He was different from ordinary children. As he grew up, his parents saw that Harold was devoted to his books. He began to show signs of being a model of goodness and intelligence. He wanted 'perfection' in everything and loved truth, honesty etc. The curate of the parish advised Bramble that he should keep the fact of his profession and shady deeds secret from Harold. Both his mother and father took every care not to let Harold know of his father's profession.

Jerry Fisher was Mr. Bramble’s trainer. They were practising at White Hart, down the road, for the due fight between Bill and the American Murphy at the National Sporting Club. When he came to know that Bill had decided not to fight on Monday, tears came to his eyes. He tried to convince him to come back and practice for the fight. He reminded Mr. Bramble of the money, he reminded him of how the press would react on his decision and most of all he asked him to think of him once before taking any final decision. At last when Bill did not agree to fight, Jerry threatened to disclose the secret of Bill’s profession to Harold. He even told the kid the truth about his father, but to everybody’s surprise, Harold was happy to know that it was his father after all known as “Young Porky” and he was also annoyed that had his father not concealed the truth from him, he would have told all the lads in the school and would have felt proud of it. After the whole drama, when Mr. Bramble was finally convinced that his profession, rather than letting down, is making his son proud. He decided to come back to practice for the 20 round fight.

BILL
BILL BRAMBLE WAS A PROFICIENT PROFESSIONAL BOXER WHO WAS PROUD OF HIS SKILLS AND LIKED TO BE ADMIRED AND APPRECIATED FOR HIS TECHNIQUE IN BOXING.HOWEVER,A LOVING FATHER AS HE WAS,HE DID NOT MIND SACRIFICING HIS NAME AND FAME TO GIVE A COMFORTABLE LIFE TO HIS DEAR SON.HENCE,HE HIDE HIS TRUE IDENTITY FROM HIM.SO MUCH SO,HE DECIDED TO GIVE UP HIS LAST CONTEST SO THAT HIS SON WOULD NOT GET TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS PROFESSION.A SIMPLE AND A HUMBLE MAN,HE TOOK NO TIME IN FORGOING THE SATISFACTION OF GIVING A NAME OF HIS CHOICE TO HIS SON AND LETTING HIS WIFE HAVE THIS PLEASURE .BILL WAS SOMEWHAT RASH IN TAKING HIS DECISIONS AND HE COULD BE EASILY INFLUENCED BY OTHERS.FOR EXAMPLE,PERCY'S ARGUMENTS THAT HE SHOULD GIVE UP BOXING IN THE INTEREST OF HIS OWN SON CONVINCED HIM.
BILL EARNED A LOT OF NAME AND FAME BUT LIVED WITH A FALSE IDENTITY FOR THE SAKE OF HAROLD.HAROLD'S POSITIVE REACTION ON LEARNING ABOUT HIS FATHER'S REAL PROFESSION  REVIVED HIS ENTHUSIASM AND HE READILY WENT BACK TO HIS TRAINING AS IN THE HEART OF HIS HEARTS HE WAS KEEN ON FIGHTING JIMMY MURPHY..
