Three problems nij cultivation were:
(i) Under nij cultivation the planters faced difficulty in expanding the area.Indigo could be cultivated only on flat fertile land which was already densely populated. Hence, planters tried to get the land on lease around the indigo factory by evicting the peasants.
(ii) Labour was not easily available. A large plantation required numerous labourers.
(iii) Nij cultivation on a large scale also required many ploughs and bullocks. Purchasing and maintenance of these ploughs was a big problem. Supplies could not be easily got from the peasants as their ploughs and bullocks were busy working on their rice fields.
