Carbon is self - lubrictaing, which will ultimately reduce wear on both the brush compound and the contact surface, regardless of what that surface actually is. 

Different materials have different coefficients of thermal expansion and coefficient of thermal  conductivity. For the greatest range of mechanical movement and have the least losses, carbon is considered to be the best material.
