A square thin plate with the side length 2m and uniform density is lying flat on a table.A force F with a magnitude of 10N is applied at one of the corners as shown above.What is the torque produced by the force F relative to the centre of the square?

Dear student,

Since the line of action of the force coincides with one of the sides of the square, the lever arm of the force, ℓ (the distance from the center of the square to the bottom side), is simply equal to 1/2 s, half the length of each side of the square. This gives us

τ = ℓF = 1/2 (2 m)(10 N) = 10 N-m

Regards
