A vessel contains two non reacting gases : neon (monatomic) and oxygen (diatomic). The ratio of their partial pressures is 3:2. Estimate the ratio of 1) number of molecules and 2) mass density of neon and oxygen in the vessel. Atomic number of Ne = 20.2, molecular mass of O2  is 32/0.

Dear student

The total pressure of a mixture of non-reactive gases is the sum of partial pressures due to its constituent gases. The temperature and volume is same for both gases so
P1V=μ1RT     for Ne gasP2V=μ2RT    for O2 gasso P1VP2V=μ1RT μ2RT P1P2=μ1μ2 =32But μ is given by NNA where NA is the Avogadro's number.so  N1N2 =32ii  we can also write μ1=m1M1, M1 is the molecular mass and m1 is mass of Ne gas.so μ1μ2 =32=m1M1m2M2m1M1×M2m2=32m120.2V×32Vm2=32m1Vm2V=3×20.232×2ρ1ρ2=0.946where ρ1=m1V and ρ2=m2V, densities of gases
