Aryl halides (or vinyl halides) and sodium alkoxide cannot be used in the preparation of anisole, which is a phenolic ether. Why?

Aryl halides (or vinyl halides) and sodium alkoxide cannot be used in the preparation of anisole, because aryl halides undergoes very slow reaction with nucleophilic substitution. The reason is the C-X bond is a stronger and shorter bond, as its involved in resonance cannt be easily removed by the incoming alkoxide ion.
