chloroform contains chlorine but gives no reaction with silver nitrate solution. why?

Hi,

Chloroform contains chlorine, even then it doesn’t give any reaction with silver nitrate solution because it is a covalent compound. If chlorine is present in the ionic form in any compound, only then it can give reaction with AgNO3 solution to give precipitate of AgCl. For example NaCl is an ionic compound, so it reacts with AgNO3 to give AgCl and NaNO3.

Hope, this answer helps.

Best wishes!
