give a chemical test to distinguish between

1)propanol and propanone

2)benzaldehyde and acetophenone

propanol+Lucas reagent (HCl conc+ZnCl2)+ heat -> turbidity appears because of formation of CH3CH2CH2Cl .

propanone + Lucas reagent -> no reaction

benzaldehyde + Tollens reagent ( ammonical silver nitrate soln) --> Ar-COO- + Ag silver mirror + NH4OH

acetophenone+ Tollens reagent --> no reaction  OR

  • -3

OR acetophenone+ NaOI --> Ar-C=O-ONa +CHI3 (yellow ppt)

benzaldehyde+ NaOI--> no reaction

Iodoform test .....in both questions propanone and acetophenone gives this test and gives yellow precipitate....benzaldehyde and propanol doesnt give yellow precipitate....this is given in cbse marking scheme of 2011 question paper

1.For propanol and propanone you can use 2,4 DNP test.
Ketones give a orange or yellow coloured ppt. with 2,4 DNP .
2.For benzaldehyde and acetophenone use Iodoform test.
Acetophenone gives yellow ppt. whereas benzaldehyde doesn't.

propanol : Being an aldehyde give positive test with fehling solution in which a red brow ppt. of cuprous oxide is obtain
propanone :Being a ketone does not respond to this test
