We can hold our fingers beside the candle without harm but not above the flame.

When you hold your hand beside a flame the radiated heat will reach you (it radiates out in all directions like the light), but not much of the convected heat, because convected heat flow is upwards (most things expand as they heat up, so they get lighter and rise), and you will not get heat from conduction unless a burning spark flies out and touches you and conducts the heat directly.
