In organic compound there is no importance of oxidation number or state(average). However we can calculate individual oxidation state of every carbon atom.
It differs atom by atom.
For example taking ethanol
CH3CH2OH
For Ist carbon atom
Oxidation state is +3 and for 2nd carbon atom, oxidation state is+1.
