• Nitrogen has 5 oxides like N2O, NO, N2O3, NO2 and N2O5 with oxidation number 1,2,3,4 and 5 respectively. Identify the acidic and neutral oxides and also arrange them in increasing order of acidic character

Nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) are neutral. Dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) are acidic. Acidic character increases with increase in oxidation number so the order is as follows:  N2O<NO<N2O3<NO2<N2O5. The most acidic is N2O5 and the least acidic is N2O.

NO   , N2O     =    NEUTRAL
NO2  , N2O3  ,N2O    =  ACIDIC

ACIDIC STRENGTH   :
NO  < N2< NO2 <  N2O3 < N2O5
