of PH3 and H2S, which is more acidic and why?
Dear Student,
Strength of hydra acids depends upon oxidation state of central atom. As the oxidation state becomes more and more negative, their acidic strength decreases. Also, as the electronegativity of central atom increases, acidic strength increases.
Now, oxidation state of P in PH3 is -3 while that of S in H2S is -2, therefore, H2S is more acidic than PH3.
Also, S is more electronegative than P. Hence, H2S is more acidic.
