Take the side cube as 10 cm. What length of the block is above the liquid • If water is poured on the mercury surface, what will be the height of water column, when the surface just covers the top of steel block ? Section 2 Self Study Course for IITJEE with Online Sup

Dear Student,

Let the height of the water column be 'h'.
In equilibrium condition: Weight of the iron block = Total upthrust
i.e, V dirong = Upthrust of water + Upthrust of mercury
1000 × 7.2 × g = h × 100 × 1 × g + (10 - h) × 100 × 13.6 g
72 = h + 136 - 13.6 h
72 = 136 - 12.6 h
12.6 h = 136 - 72
12.6 h = 64
y = 5.08 cm
