pls ans 10th ...ans is given 2 but shudnt it be 4?? explain

Dear Student,
Surface tension is dependent on only cohesive forces between the same molecules and not on the adhesive forces between different types of molecules.
A molecule lying on the surface is attracted more by the molecules lying in the bulk of the liquid than by the molecules lying above it in the vapour phase. Thus, a molecule lying on the surface experiences a net inward attraction. This inward pull on all molecules lying on the surface causes surface tension.
This inward tension can be noticed by putting a needle on the surface of water. It does not sink although it is denser than water.
This is due to surface tension.
Adhesion is the attraction between different types of molecules. It causes a phenomenon called capillary rise and not surface tension. Although capillary rise depends on the surface tension of a liquid.
SO option 2 is correct.
