Q) explain dinitration of 3-methylphenol

Dinitration of 3-methyl phenol - proceed as the OH and the CH3 group are o- and p- directing. So, the electrophile will attack on the 2nd, 4th, and 6th position but here on the 2nd position there is steric hindrance experienced by the electrophile. So attack on the second position will not take place and For nitration, HNO3 and H2SO4 as a nitrating mixture are used and NO2 group is attached.
