What does kalapani mean ? What is its historical relevance?

It has many meanings like:
It was a cellular jail during British times In India in Andman and Nicobar Islands which was meant to punish the dangerous criminals like revolutionaries, hardened criminals and political dissendents who were against the British rule.
It was also realted to the over sea movement as Indians who crossed the sea to live somewhere in UK during the British rule in  18th and 19th century.The same oversea movement by crossing the seas was known as Kalapani.It was banned in many relions here in India at that time.
