What is compound words?Explain with example.

When two (sometimes, three) words are combined to form a new word with a different meaning, it is called a compound word.
There are three kinds of such words:
a) Open compound words: the words are separated by a gap.
Example- ice cream, real estate
b) Closed compound words: the words are written as one
Example- Notebook, waistcoat
c) Hyphenated Compound words: the words are separated by a hyphen
Example- long-term, mother-in-law
