What is enthalpy of atomisation ?

The enthalpy of atomisation can be defined as the enthalpy change that accompanies the total separation of all the atoms present in a chemical substance (element or compound). This is represented by the symbol ∆atHo.

 Definition: Enthalpy of atomization is the amount of enthalpy change when a compound'sbonds are broken and the component atoms are reduced to individual atoms.

Enthalpy of atomization is denoted by the symbol ΔHa.

 Enthalpy change on breaking one mole of bonds completely to obtain atoms in the gas phase is called enthalpy of atomization.
