what is the difference in shape and structure of a compoud

Dear Student,

Shape in chemistry refers to an geometry of the compound i.e. the way in which atoms in a molecule occupy space whereas structure just tell about the bonding in a molecule . The Lewis structute are drawn with the valence shell electrons while shape is given by hybridisation.
Eg. structure and shape of CH4 is shown below :
Structure :

Shape : Tetrahedral

  • -1
shape- use "shape" to refer to how the object fits in with other objects in the system.
stucture - use "structure" to refer to how the object is designed and implemented internally.
