Which of the following statements is incorrect for Raoults law? and why?

  • A ) Total vapour pressure over the solution can be related to the mole fraction of only one component.
  • B ) Total vapour pressure over the solution varies linearly with the mole fraction of component 2.
  • C ) Depending on the vapour pressures of components 1 and 2, the total vapour pressure over the solution decreases with increase or decrease of mole fraction of component 1.
  • D ) Total vapour pressure over the solution is the sum of partial pressure of components of solution.

Statement A is incorrect.
According to the law , the total pressure of the solution is equal to the sum of the partial pressure of each component.
For a two component system containing liquids A and B, the total pressure is
P =pA + pB   ;           pi = xipio   i = A, BP =xApAo + xBpBoP =(1-xB)pAo + xBpBo         Since,  xA + xB = 1P =pAo + xB(pBo-pAo)                ORP =pBo + xA(pAo-pBo)
It can be seen clearly that the total pressure depends on mole fraction of both of the components.
