Why CrO is ionic where as CrO3 is covalent

Dear Student,

Cr in CrO3 exists in +6 oxidation state which is its highest oxidation state while in CrO it is in +2 oxidation state.
Ions in high oxidation state exhibit covalent character due to Fajan's rule while in low oxidation state show ionic character.
Cation in high oxidation state are said to exhibit high polarisibility.

Hence, CrO3 is covalent while CrO is ionic.
