CBSE Class 9 Science Important TopicsSA1 or the Summative Assessment is just around the corner and all Class 9 students must have ideally created a revision timetable and begun their revisions. If you haven’t yet done so, then we recommend you do this now. This is a good approach rather than leaving things to the last days of their preparation.

It is most important to prioritize what topics are important in Class 9th CBSE Science and create your time table accordingly.

Science is a subject that needs to be studied with a structure because a lot of the concepts are interconnected.  To score more and to be prepared to tackle all the tough questions in the subject, pay attention to the list of important chapters below:

Unit: Matter – Nature and Behaviour

Chapter 1: Matter in Our Surrounding

– You can expect short, concept testing questions from this chapter.

– Questions on different states of matter mainly solid, liquid and gas are asked indirectly by giving their characteristics.

          a) When asked to define key concepts from this chapter, be sure to include examples as they are very important
in case of change of states of matter like melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation and sublimation.
          b) The concept of Latent heat should be on your finger tips.

Chapter 2: Is Matter Around Us Pure

This is another chapter that can help you score those easy numbers in the paper. Work on:

          a) Element, compound and mixture
          b) Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures
          c) True solution, Colloids and Suspension

– Numerical questions are also asked from this chapter, so refresh your concepts on:

          a) The ways of expression of concentration of solution, mainly
          b) Mass by mass percentage of a solution
          c) Mass by volume percentage of a solution

2. Which of the following shows Tyndall effect – sugar solution or milk?
3. Smoke and fog both are aerosols .In what way are they different?

Unit: Organisation in the living world

Chapter 5: The Fundamental Unit of Life

If you know this chapter very well,  you will be sure to sail through the exam because you can find long and short answer type questions being set from here.

a) Draw neat and well labeled structure of different types of cells and cell organelles.
b) Learn by heart the differences between prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Mitochondria (power house of the cell), chloroplast, Nucleus (DNA and chromosomes), Endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus are definitions that you must compulsorily revise before the exam.

Chapter 6: Tissues

We know you have a tough time memorising the locations and functions of each tissue, therefore here’s a Meritnation Tip  to make this chapter a cake walk.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Draw a whole plant or animal body, write the name of respective tissues at their proper locations and practice it two/ three times. A visual always helps you remember the locations and functions better.

Unit: Motion, Force and Work

Chapter 8: Motion

This chapter has generally been viewed as one of those where students fumble.

Questions on motion in term of graphs is commonly asked and students are at a loss so as to draw different graphs  based on the varied concepts asked.

Practice drawing distance-time graphs, displacement-time graphs, velocity-time graph in different states of motion.

You would do well if you study the derivation of equations of motion using graphical method. Numerical questions are also asked as an alternative to the derivative questions. Questions can be asked on : v=u+at, s=ut+1/2at2 and v2 – u2 =2as.  The questions may be formula based can be a little tricky. Solve the question step wise since every critical step is assigned a mark.

Chapter 9: Force and Law of Motion

Learn the definitions of inertia, mass and Newton’s laws of motion as part of the higher order analytical questions. Practical applications of Law of Conservation of momentum like collision, recoil of a pistol etc are mostly asked.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Do not forget to revise the mathematical derivation of F = ma using concept of momentum change! Work on these concepts from this chapter and breeze through the exam.

Chapter 10: Gravitation

Brush up your concepts on Gravitation as you can face theoretical questions like difference in mass and weight, law of gravitation with its formula, concept of gravity and it acceleration in the exam.

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: The topic Motion of body under free fall motion is important. Question about weightless condition is related with it so concentrate on revising it right! If it seems a little tough to follow, watch a video explaining the concept. You will understand it better!

Unit: Food

Chapter 15: Improvement in food resources

The following topics most surely appear in both short or long answer type sections. Focus on the principle of Plant Breeding for

          a) Disease Resistance ,
          b) Developing Resistance to Insect Pests and
          c)Improved Food Quality

study tip for science meritnationMERITNATION TIP: Prepare to write short notes on
a) Dairy Farm Management
b) Poultry Farm Management
c) Bee-keeping
d) Fisheries
e) Manures
f) Fertilizers
g) Pesticides
h) Weedicides

SA1 is an assessment of all that you have learnt and understood in class up till now. We are sure that if you have paid attention in class, come home and revised the concepts well and have looked at animated videos online to  understand the tough topics, you will be able to clear the exams with flying colors!

All the best with your SA1 revisions and exams! 🙂
