Stem cells

Stem cells are unspecialised cells which are capable of regenerating themselves. All the other cells in a multicellular organism arise from stem cells. 

Stem cells are of two types:

Embryonic stem cells- These are stem cells which are found in embryos.
Adult stem cells- The stem cells which are extracted from adults are called adult stem cells.

Organ transplantation



 

• The method of surgically removing an organ from the body of the donor and inserting it to the body of the recipient is called organ transplantation.

• Heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, etc. are some organs that can be transplanted.

Living donors: A person who donates his organ or any of its part, while alive, to another person is called living donor. The living donor is more often a person from one’s own family. 

Non- living donor: A person who has registered for donation of organ, provided that the organ will be harvested from his body at the time of his death is called non-living donor.
