9 Tips on How To Revise Your Course Effectively

Meritnation|Feb 17th, 2014 04:15pm

Have you finished studying the entire syllabus once before your exam and still feel you can prepare some more? The best thing you can do to make sure you score well is a good round of revision.

Revision does not only stand for going over the course studied in a faster manner; it involves using innovative and helpful techniques to test and improve yourself. There are some very useful tips you can use to make sure your revision schedule is effective.

1. Make sure you have not missed out any topics
The first obvious thing to do would be to check whether you have prepared all the topics in the syllabus or not. In case you missed out any topics while initial preparation, this would be the ideal time to complete the course.

2. Make short notes or pointers

Each time you take up a new topic or chapter, make revision notes in short, i.e., take down key words, sentences, definitions, formulas or dates, if any. This way, the information is retained better.

3. Once you have prepared all subjects once, analyse your strong and weak points respectively
In every subject, there are bound to be topics that you are good at, while others make you slightly uncomfortable. Mark out both these categories separately. Now, in order to gain better marks, work on your weak points, (although it might be very boring to do so). This will make sure that you get at least some marks in less prepared topics too.

4. Take help from online sources
There are available, on the internet, online study guides that help you revise in new and innovative ways. You could revise your entire syllabus and take model tests as well.

5. Revise according to a timetable
One of the recommended ways of smart studying is to study & revise according to a set schedule. Revising any random subject or topic at any given time will confuse your brain and you might lose track of things you have prepared too! So, chalk out a definite schedule for revision and follow it.

6. Do not forget to take breaks
When you study for long hours at a stretch, without allowing your body and mind to relax, the information in the brain gets clogged. In no way can this information now be written effectively in the exams! So take enough rest in between revision sessions so that your brain gets the chance to absorb the information and retain it till the actual hour of examination.

7. Share your revision hours with friends/classmates
Sitting together in study groups or pairs for revision helps as you can get additional notes and information from your friends or study mates. Also, the high amounts of anxiety that many people feel before exams is lessened.

8. Make sure you have cleared all your doubts regarding formulas and theories
Preparing for days and weeks for your exams and forgetting significant points during the exam can be heart-breaking. So make sure you do not leave any doubts unsolved as these can become an obstacle.

9. Maintain a positive attitude
Last, but not the least, you should be able to channelise your mind in a positive and determined state. Becoming anxious and scared about your exams will not help you; taking the right decisions and maintaining constant study schedule will.
