Exam Stress2Final exams are just round the corner. You must be hurrying to finish all the remaining portions and jump to revisions soon. Every student will experience some form of exam stress. It’s an unavoidable part of the student life and can be a tough nut to crack. You must remember that stress exists for a reason and you can choose to let it be your downfall or use it to drive you to improve your learning.

Before you are armed to combat exam stress, first you need to understand the reasons behind this heightened anxiety. Researchers have uncovered some common explanations for this:

1. Lack of preparation and planning
2. Competition from peers
3. High expectations from others
4. Low motivation levels

The only difference between students who allow stress to overwhelm them and those who use it to push them harder is that the latter recognize that they are still in control. They pause, reflect and choose a path that helps them to overcome the impasse, not waiting for the wave to engulf them. Below are some ways that you can put those negative feelings aside and concentrate on your learning goals.

Exam-stress

1. Listen to Classical Music: Listening to classical music creates a positive and productive environment. It elevates your mood and encourages you to study more effectively. If you’re not a fan of classical music try listening to instrumental of your choice.

2. Take a Quick Walk: Many students feel that they should spend their entire time with their books open. However, research has proven that exercising such as taking a walk can boost your memory and brain power to retain longer.

3. Plan your Study Routine: Create a timetable and stick to it. Give equal importance to each subject and allocate time accordingly. Try and be very realistic about the goals you set here, making a good allowance for breaks in between.

4. Eat Dark Chocolate: Believe it or not but it’s absolutely true. Dark chocolate contains over 70% cocoa which fights the stress hormone- cortisol and has an overall relaxing effect on the body. Plus chocolate releases endorphin which act as a natural stress fighter.

5. Break Free from Distractions: You don’t even realise how many times you check Facebook, Instagram or whatever your vice is. When you add it all up together, it amounts to a significant waste of time. We know that it can be hard to detach from your life outside of studying but keeping the end goal and timeframe in mind will ease the process.

We hope you’ll use these tips to de-stress and come through with flying colours.

    Hi Aditi,

To say that music really does help in memorization is still under speculation. Although many researchers, as well as students, who think listening to music helps memory have called the practice the “Mozart Effect” where listening to Mozart’s music can increase the likelihood of performing well on a test.

In a recent study by Dr. Nick Perham (2010), he theorized saying that “listening to music may diminish your cognitive abilities in these situations (studying and listening to music together) because when you’re trying to memorize things in order, you can get thrown off and confused by the various words and notes in the song playing in the background.”

We suggest you to listen music without lyrics as they can be very distracting while reading.

All the Best with your exams!
