Parents’ Guide for IIT-JEE

True to its every word, the contribution of a parent on a child's future is unmeasurable. The overall development of children's character, how well they perform in studies, how bright their future turns out to be, etc., are some some of the factors in which the parent's contribution is immense. So, when it comes down to the performance of a student in any entrance examination, the contributing factors of the parents are not quite different. Needless to say, the competition is fierce and also the pressure building up on students is huge. In a situation where even fractions of mark can determine the rank of a student, a good preparation along with mental stability of the students can turn out to be the turning point in cracking IIT-JEE. But most of the times it becomes unattainable singlehandedly. Parent's contributions play a huge role in the success of the students in IIT-JEE. So, if your son or daughter is preparing for IIT-JEE and you want to know how you can be of help, you need to keep in mind the following points and implement them as well. 1. Know your subject's interest: The first and foremost duty of the parents is to understand whether their children are at all interested in studying engineering or not. Gone are the days when every student wanted to be either doctor or engineer. Never try to force your children to opt for engineering just because you want him/her to be an engineer. Talk with them, guide them properly and if they are indeed interested, support them in their decision. 2. Do your homework: To be able to guide your children properly for appearing in IIT-JEE, you got to have all the knowhow related to it. IIT-JEE is known for throwing surprises like the recent change in pattern of IIT-JEE to JEE Mains and JEE Advanced which was implemented on 2013. 3. Monitoring your child's performance: Parents should always keep a close watch as in how their child is performing. The time in high school is very crucial for the youngsters as their future depends on it and also, they tend to get easily distracted with the lot many things happening around them. You should ensure that your ward is not distracted as it will affect adversely on their scorecard. 4. Encourage: Only about 2% of the aspiring candidates get to study in the prestigious IIT. This doesn't mean the future of your child is doomed. The preparation for the entrance is itself a huge learning experience that will help your children in their future endeavors. Make sure your children prepare well for the entrance and rest will automatically follow. It is seen from surveys that about 30% of the students who do not clear JEE attend low quality classes. So make sure that your ward attend good classes and prepare well by giving his/her 100%. Still at the end of the day if your ward fails to make it to the IITs, you have to understand that its not your child's fault and also make him understand the same. If your child is appearing for the exam, keep in mind that too much strictness or too much carelessness will never help.
