Maharashtra Board Class 9 English Syllabus for 2014-15

Students of Maharashtra Board schools have been prescribed a comprehensive yet effective syllabus for Class 9 English for the year 2014-15. The English syllabus for class 9 has been designed to develop students' grammatical as well as literary knowledge. Class 9 students will be able to manage their exam preparation with ease, with the help of this year's English syllabus.

General Objectives:

To enable the student to :

1. develop his/her language skills to a fair degree of proficiency.

2. acquire communication skills in English useful for higher education and also for real life situations, such as social interaction, vocations and entrepreneurship development.

3. enrich his / her vocabulary.

4. use English in appropriate grammatical forms.

5. use dictionaries, encyclopedias and such other reference materials.

6. develop the ability to use English for the development of personality and for the building of character.

7. cultivate a broad human and cultural outlook.

8. develop interest in and appreciation of Literature.

9. to facilitate self learning to enable them to become independent learners.

Syllabus:

1. A Coursebook in English (Kumarbharati)

a) Detailed study:

i) Prose: About 64 pages of literary and nonliterary (informative) text (excluding notes, illustrations, tasks, etc.

ii) Poetry: About 250 lines. Non-detailed study : A selection of literary texts (short stories, one act play)

2. Grammar

a) Revision of grammatical items studied up to Std VIII.

b) Different kinds of sentences: Assertive/Exclamatory/Imperative/Negative/Interrogative

c) The Tenses:

i) Simple present

ii) Present Continuous

iii) Simple past

iv) Past Continuous

v) Sequence of tenses

d) Articles: a, an, the

e) Prepositions: Different Uses

f) Tenses of perception: Uses of ‘see', ‘hear', ‘smell', ‘feel', ‘taste'

g) Concord: Subject +Verb agreement

h) Word Formation: Nouns/Adjectives/Verbs/Adverbs

i) Voice: Statements, questions, negatives, indirect object

j) Question formation:

i) Yes/No question

ii) ‘Wh'+ question

k) Reported Speech: Statements, questions, commands, requests

l) Punctuation: Usage

m) Non-finites: Infinitives, Gerunds, Participles

n) Modal Auxiliaries: Uses of ‘will', ‘shall'

o) Collocation: The co-occurrence of lexical items

Weightage to be given at Std. IX :

The following weightage is to be given to the various aspects of the syllabus:

1. Reading Skill (Textual and non-textual) 40%

2. Grammar 15%

3. Writing skill 25%

4. Oral test 20%
