JEE Advanced

The JEE process consists of 2 exams – the JEE Main and the JEE Advanced. The 1,50,000 top scoring students in the JEE Main exam become eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam. The JEE Advanced exam is taken for admission into under graduate level courses in IITs and ISM Dhanbad and some other institutes. Every year, the exam conducting IIT changes the test pattern. Last year, IIT Guwahati conducted JEE Advanced. Both papers, 1 and 2, carried a total of 54 questions each. Till 2016 the exam was of 372 marks, each paper of total 186 marks. However, this year there is change where each paper is for total 183 marks.

JEE Advanced Paper Pattern

  • The JEE Advanced 2017 will have two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • Each paper will have 3 sections of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Each paper has a maximum of 183 marks.
  • The sectional division of paper 1 :-
    • Section 1 – 7 questions, 4 marks each i.e. total 28 marks
    • Section 2 – 5 questions, 3 marks each i.e. total 15 marks
    • Section 3 – 6 questions, 3 marks each i.e. total 18 marks
  • The sectional division of paper 2 :-
    • Section 1 – 7 questions, 3 marks each i.e. total 21 marks
    • Section 2 – 7 questions, 4 marks each i.e. total 28 marks
    • Section 3 – 4 questions, 3 marks each i.e. total 12 marks
  • Each paper will be of 3 hours duration
  • The JEE Advanced question papers are available in both English and Hindi. Applicants can choose the language option at the time of applying for the exam.

JEE Advanced 2017 Important Dates

The IITs are yet to publish the date sheet for the JEE Advanced 2017, however the tentative schedule is as below:

  • JEE Advanced 2016 Important DatesJEE Advanced 2017 Brochure will be available for download in October 2016.
  • Online Registration for JEE Advanced will commence in May 2017 after the results of JEE Main 2017.
  • JEE Main 2017 results will be declared by in the first week of May 2017 (tentatively).
  • JEE Advanced 2017 Exam will be conducted in the 3rd or 4th week of May 2017.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria

Criterion 1 – Performance in JEE Main 2017

  • Aspiring candidates must be among the top 2,20,000 (including all categories) by scoring positive marks in JEE Main 2017 Paper I.
  • The percentages of different categories are 50.5% (open for all), 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST. Within each of the aforesaid 4 categories, 3% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates, including Dyslexic ones.
  • While choosing top 2,20,000 candidates in various categories (who have scored positive marks in JEE Main 2017), usual order will be followed (See the table below).

Criterion 2 – Age limit

  • The applicants must be born on or after October 1, 1992.
  • Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories will get 5 years relaxation, thus, they should have been born on or after October 1, 1987.

Criterion 3 – Number of attempts

Aspiring candidates of JEE Advanced can take the entrance exam a maximum of 2 times in consecutive years. Therefore, students who had appeared in JEE Advanced 2016 for the first time are also eligible to take JEE Advanced 2017.

Criterion 4 – Appearance in class XII or equivalent exam

  • Candidate are required to have studied in 12th class or equivalent exam for the first time in either 2016 or 2017.
  • However, candidates whose result of class XII or equivalent test for 2014-15 was announced after June 2015 are eligible to take JEE Advanced 2017.

Criterion 5 – Earlier admission at IITs

  • Candidates earlier admitted to any of the IITs, despite whether they had continued the programme or not or accepted the IIT seat by reporting at a reporting centre in the past, are not eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2017. Candidates with cancelled admission to IITs in the past are also not eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2017.
  • Aspirants, who had taken admission in preparatory courses in any of the IITs for the first time in the year 2016, are eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2017.
  • Desirous students who have paid seat acceptance fee but had not accepted the seat (by not reporting at any reporting centre in JoSAA 2016) will also be considered eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2017.

Application Procedure

  • The JEE Advanced brochure is released each year in the month of October. It has all the important application dates.
  • Registration is through the online portal only, the details of which are available in the brochure as well on the site. Candidates fill up the JEE Advanced Application Form.
  • Candidates are also required to pay an application fee through e-challan or at all SBI branches. The fee is generally Rs. 2000 for candidates from General category and Rs. 1000 for candidates from the SC, ST and PwD categories. All female candidates are exempt from application fees for JEE Advanced.
  • Even if a candidate did not opt for appearing in the JEE Advanced 2016 while registering for JEE Main 2017, he/she can register for JEE Advanced 2017.
  • Application for JEE Advanced 2017 CANNOT be withdrawn after registration is completed.
  • Detailed instructions for online registration will be provided on the registration portal.
