IIT Kerala begins its first academic session

IIT-Palakkad KrisIndia’s 18th IIT commenced its first academic session on August 3, 2015. The institute in Palakkad, Kerala began its first year with a total of 117 students. Surprisingly, only 6 students are from the state itself and a majority are from Uttar Pradesh.

IIT-Palakkad currently offers four B.Tech courses – Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

The Union Minister for Human Resources, Smriti Irani, addressed the students and their parents through video conferencing from the Capital. She encouraged the students and advised them to inculcate a social perspective and aim at developing a well-rounded life apart of focusing only on studies.The minister urged students to ensure that society benefits from their activities in the campus. Founder member of Infosys, Kris Gopalakrishnan gave the inaugural address and Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT-Madras and several others took classes on the inaugural day.

The classes currently have begun in a temporary campus in Valayar and it is expected that they will shift to a 500-acre permanent campus in Puthussery district within three years, after completion of land acquisition process and construction of buildings.
